NASB | Matthew 23:23 ¶ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 23:23 ¶ "Woe to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you give a tenth (tithe) of your mint and dill and cumin [focusing on minor matters], and have neglected the weightier [more important moral and spiritual] provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the [primary] things you ought to have done without neglecting the others. |
Bible Question: I would like to know verses in the Old and New Testaments concerning tithing. Thank you. |
Bible Answer: LRCampbell, there are 20 posts on "tithing". Just us the Search on the upper left corner. Levitcus 27:20 tells to tithe everything. There is a second tithe brought yearly to the tabernacle and eaten before the Lord (Deu. 12:6,7,17-19; 14:22-27) There is a third tithe, every third year to promote hospitality and charity (Deu. 14:28,29; 26:12-15). So that was 19 percent per year and 27 percent every three years, average 22 percent. Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek (Gen. 14:20; Heb. 7:6); and Jacob vowed unto the Lord to give a tenth (Gen. 28:22). These were given before the Law. In the NT, do not count all your seeds to make sure you give a tenth of all and neglect something greater - justice, mercy, and faith (Mat. 23:23). This passage says that we should no stop tithing. |
