Bible Question:
I have read all the postings about this verse, and all seem to make sense, but none click for me. Doesnt Jesus say, 21 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. 22If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." I wish to highlight the word WILL, you 'WILL' receive whatever you ask for. It doesn't say, 'If you believe, whatever request you make will be put before God.' I also beleive this ties in closely with, 'God hears the prayer of a righteous man.' So my reasoning is, a prayer offered in righteousness WILL be answered. 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. Here i beleive the key phrase is 'so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.' When asking for things, think, 'will it bring glory to my God?' These are my thoughts, with this, it seems evident that Jesus is promising that my prayers will be answered, but why arn't they answered when i pray that God's presence fills my bedroom while im praying at night, or that my sick Grandmother is healed, or that i see the face of God and can have a converstaion with Him, or that a messenger is sent to my non-chrisitan girlfriend so that she will see and believe. All these things would bring SUCH glory to God! I KNOW that Jesus isn't a lier, and if he said those things, they are true, which means it can only be something wrong on my part... How do i gain more faith...? I was praying on this a few nights ago and a phrase came to my mind, 'How can i know the power of God if i don't know the heart of God.' That has been my strongest lead so far in solving this... Thanks if you've had the patience to read this long question... |
Bible Answer: Greg Laurie writes: The Key to Answered Prayer "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you." – John 15:7 How often have you felt that your prayers were hitting a glass ceiling—as though the Lord were saying no? Maybe it is because you are praying outside of His will. Maybe it is because you were praying for something that God didn't want you to have. We need to remember the promise Jesus spoke of in John 15, which says, "If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you." Another translation puts it this way: "If you maintain a living communion with Me and My words are at home with you, you can ask at once for yourself whatever your heart desires, and it is yours." I really like that translation—especially the part that tells us to ask at once whatever our hearts desire. But let's remember the condition: "If you maintain a living communion with Me and My words are at home with you. . . . " If you are maintaining a living communion with God, and His words are at home with you, then your desires going to change. Your prayers will not necessarily be the same as they were before. As you get in sync with the will of God, you'll see that prayer is not getting God to do what you want Him to do, but that prayer is getting you to do what God wants you to do. You will discover the important truth that prayer is not bending God our way—it is bending us His way. And then, you just may see your prayers being answered in the affirmative.
