Subject: When is marriage given as a command? |
Bible Note: kalos: Some years ago a professing Christian and his professing Christian lady friend, both widowed, decided they were in love and wished to get married. but on account of money matters did not wish to be legally married. Their solution was to ask an acquaintance who called himself a part-time minister to perform a wedding ceremony but not to register their "marriage" at the courthouse of their county of legal residence. The ceremony took place and the couple considered themselves married. I was well acquainted with both of them. I took a dim view of the whole proceedings and let the couple know it. Their justification was that they were married in God's sight even though they had no legal document to prove that they were ever married. Both of them said, "A marriage certificate is just a piece of paper." .... Well, Dottie and I have been married nearly 45 years and we don't think of our marriage certificate as "just as piece of paper." Nor are the Ten Commandments "just a piece of paper, nor the Sermon on the Mount, nor the Declaration of Independence, nor the United States Constitution. All these documents are infinitely more than just pieces of paper. ...... Behind that piece of paper called a marriage certificate lie love, honor, resolution, commitment, respect, loyality, devotion and, most importantly, God's seal and stamp of approval of the sacred union of a man and a woman in holy matrimony. If financial considerations are stronger than the bond of love between a man and a woman so as to lead them to seek a way to ease their conscience by entering into a sham marriage, there is a fatal flaw in the relationship to begin with. --Hank |
