Bible Question: What really is marriage from the perspective of God? Is it simply the slip of paper that registers your new last name with the state that you live in? Or is it more than just a peic eof paper? Is it the commitment to one another that you are one in Christ, regardless of whether or not ther eis a paper on file in the county courthouse saying you got dressed up one day and changed your last name through a ten minute long symbolic ceremony? I really am hoping someone will be able to answer my question with some biblical refrences, because this is an issue that is really on my heart. |
Bible Answer: Greetings! As a pastor, I have had to address this question during pre-maritial counseling. Allow me to share my thoughts on this question. Scripture does not prescribe how one must be married. In other words, Scripture does lay out a ceremony or even describe one. However, Scripture does recognize marriage as a legal contract between two people. Therefore, my assumption is simply this: I believe that God expects us to conform to whatever legal requirements are demanded of us by our culture, as long as they are not in violation of His Word. So, in our case, God expects us to file that piece of paper at the courthouse. Without it, we are not really married. Otherwise, anyone could simply claim to be married. Yet, there would not be any legal contract to back up that claim. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
