AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 18:8 ¶ "If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble and sin, cut it off and throw it away from you [that is, remove yourself from the source of temptation]; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into everlasting fire. |
Bible Question:
WHAT DID JESUS MEAN HERE? Mat 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. |
Bible Answer: Hi, Josh... Welcome to the forum! Christ means that no matter how difficult, extreme, painful, or harsh any command of God might seem, nothing ought to be more precious to us than His justice. Everything else that we think is more valuable or more important reveals our enslavement to temporal things (i.e., things that will not last) rather than eternal things. By using hyperpole, our Lord reveals our foolishness for clinging to worthless things, rather than hanging on tightly to the treasure of our God. In Him, Doc |
