Bible Question:
The NIV translates this verse: Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times." - then it has a footnote "Or seventy times seven". I've noticed translations go back and forth between the two numbers. Any idea why and what the right answer is? I know in the grand scheme of salvation, it's not that important, but it's just been a bothersome thing. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Thestraws! Just to add to what Steve said, the Greek literally says "Seventy/times seven". The problem is that the most natural way of writing our 70 X 7 would have been "Seventy/times Seven/times". However, in some writings, this same phrase as used in Mt. 18:22 appears to mean 490 as opposed to 77. Like Steve, I think 490 is probably correct, but important point isn't the number! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
