Bible Note: Dear YenisaRap, Our society is one that places a high value on amicability. Indeed, we are a people who even cherish friendliness above truth. Consequently, we often confuse respect for people with respect for positions. We are frequently more interested in peaceful coexistence than in sound doctrine. I do not find Scripture in support of these things. Nor do we see examples of that worldly sort of toleration and charity exhibited in Scripture. Even the passages that you provided are directed to how believers are to relate in the context of the local congregation. We are to be a meek people, as our Lord commands. However, meekness should not be confused with weakness. As A. W. Pink put it, "God-given meekness can also stand up for God-given rights: when God’s glory is impeached, we must have a zeal which is as hot as fire." John Calvin put it in another way, "A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I saw that God's Truth was attacked and yet would remain silent." I suspect that Martin Luther expressed it most succinctly when he said, "I am not permitted to let my love be so merciful as to tolerate and endure false doctrine. When faith and doctrine are concerned and endangered, neither love nor patience are in order... when these are concerned, neither toleration nor mercy are in order, but only anger, dispute, and destruction -- to be sure, only with the Word of God as our weapon." As a study Bible forum, in a public venue, we draw the attention of many who express heterodoxy of one form or another. Lockman, our gracious host, has provided a set of guidelines. When they deem that those terms of use have been violated, they have been known to intercede. Thank you for your concern, miss, and your encouragement for righteous behavior. Your participation in our study is much appreciated. In Him, Doc |
