Bible Question:
If we do not forgive everyone yet we are believers, are we still saved through the work of Christ on the cross? Scripture says that all who profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and confess our sin are saved does it not? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Pastor Chuck... Welcome to the forum! Given that we know from other Scripture that salvation is not merited (Romans 3:24; Ephesians 2:8; etc.), we ought not read the mandates to forgive as the means by which we are forgiven. Indeed, it would be difficult to imagine that a believer, forgiven so much by an infinitely righteous Father, would withhold forgiveness from those who wronged that person, and who subsequently sought forgiveness (Luke 7:47). Perhaps it would be better for us therefore, to understand this, in the long run, as a description of the saved, rather than a prescription for salvation. In other words, those who are forgiven much, will be great forgivers. Wouldn't that seem to be the sense of the parable given in response to Peter's question of Matthew 18:21? In Him, Doc PS God bless you in your ministry as you seek to tend to the flock of our Lord. We will be praying for you! |
