AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 17:10 The disciples asked Him, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" |
Bible Question:
In Luke 1:13 Zechariah is instructed to name his son John. Then the eighth day after John's birth (his bris: naming and circumcision) Elizabeth confirms his name as John, which is highly unusual since this was not a family name, as stated in Luke 1:60. Question: does anyone know why he was named John and is there a name relationship between John and Elijah? i.e., Is John another name for Elijah? Or does the name John have some other significance? |
Bible Answer: There actually is a relationship there between Elijah and John the Baptist. We read this in Matthew 17:10-13 "10 And His disciples asked Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" 11 And He answered and said, "Elijah is coming and will restore all things; 12 but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 13 Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist." |
