AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 16:21 ¶ From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples [clearly] that He must go to Jerusalem, and endure many things at the hands of the elders and the chief priests and scribes (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court), and be killed, and be raised [from death to life] on the third day. [Mark 8:31-9:1; Luke 9:22-27] |
Bible Question: HOW COULD JESUS HAVE REMINED IN THE TOMB FOR THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IF HE WAS CRUCIFIED ON FRIDAY AND ROSE ON SUNDAY? |
Bible Answer: To Jewish thinking any part of a day is a day. The day begins at sundown. He was put in the tomb on Friday afternoon (day 1) at sundown Friday it was day two, and at sundown saturday it was day three. Sunday morning was part of day three. The most frequent phrase used was "he rose on the third day." If he was literally in the tomb three days and three nights, he would have risen on the fourth day which would be a contridiction. Jesus words are understood in light of historal and cultural context. |
