Bible Question: In Matthew 16:19 , 18:18 It says' Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven" What does bound and loose mean in this verse and for us a believers? I have been given several meanings. |
Bible Answer: Chrissin, It is important to note the distinction between Matt 16:18-19 and Matt 18:18. In 16:18-19 Peter alone is given the keys of the kingdom and the power to bind and loose. The Greek language used there is in the singular for "you." In 18:18 Peter and the other Apostles are given the power to bind and loose, but the others are not given the keys of the kingdom. The language there is in the plural for" you." Peter has a unique position among the apostles in primacy and also the authority of the keys. See Isaiah 22:20-25 for an Old Testament indication of the authority of the delegated keyholder within the kingdom. But your main question related to binding and loosing which refers to authority of the apostles within the community of believers, the House of God, the Church. "Binding and Loosing" (Hebrew: asar ve-hittar) ...a Rabinnical term for "forbidding and permitting."... In this sense Jesus, when appointing his disciples to be his successors, used the familiar formula (Matt 16:19; 18:18). By these words he virtually invested them with the same authority which he found belonng to the Scribes and Pharisees who "bind heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but will not move them with one of their fingers"; that is "loose them," as they have the power to do (Matt 23:2-4)." David H. Stern , Jewish New Testament Commentary, Clarksville, MD ; Jewish New testament Publications, 1992) 56-57 This authority has also been related to the authority to absolve sins in John 20:23 Much more detail could be given on this question. This is only a very brief treatment of the question. Emmaus |
