NASB | Matthew 16:19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 16:19 "I will give you the keys (authority) of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth will have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth will have [already] been loosed in heaven." [Is 22:22; Matt 18:18] |
Bible Question: I am interested in your thoughts on binding and loosing. Is it as my charismatic friends understand it, to bind and loose spiritual powers as it were or is it about forgiveness. Or is it both. Does it have to do with asking the Lord to forgive a person that has wronged you adn thus giving that person a greater chance of salvation? So that when a saint prays and intercedes and asks the Lord to save and deliver people they are loosing, and if they hold someone accountable for their wrong doing they are binding? Or is it that of saying "I bind the spirit of alcohol" and such like that I often hear, but do not see an example of in the scripture. I am interested in scriptural dialog about this. Thanks |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... Matt 16:17-19 (vs 19), 18:15-20 (vs 18); Acts 5:1-10 (vv 3, 9) ... Scribe, greetings. Search the Scriptures, first. Look at the context and the specific verses I cited. This has been discussed before. Under Quick Search type [bind loose] and also look under Matthew 18:18. Matthew 18:18 nearly says the thing, "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." -Is it to loose spiritual powers as it were ... not that I see it. -Is it about forgiveness ... according to the context of Matthew 18:18, it is not. It deals with repentance ... which also fits with Acts 5:1-10. -Your forgiving someone does not greater chance of salvation. You do not decide who will be saved, but you may be a factor. -When a saint prays and intercedes and asks the Lord to save and deliver people they are loosing, and if they hold someone accountable for their wrong doing they are binding? ... This may be close. If they person repents they are loosed, if not, they are bound. -Is it that of saying "I bind the spirit of alcohol" and such like that I often hear, but do not see an example of in the scripture? ... No. There is no "spirit of alcohol" ... people chose to drink. Hope this helps, Searcher |
