Bible Question: in matthew 16:18-19 what is Jesus referring to with regard to binding and loosing? |
Bible Answer: Hi balemian2004, Here is this passage from the J.P. Green Literal Version: Mat 16:18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against her. Mat 16:19 And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven. And whatever you bind on earth shall occur, having been bound in Heaven. And whatever you may loose on the earth shall be, having been loosed in Heaven. When they spoke of "binding and loosing" in a rabbinical context, this was of prohibiting or allowing, in regards to interpreting the Law. When Jesus told Peter, and later all the disciples (Matt 18:18), these things, He was telling them that their judgment of matters would reflect what had already been determined in heaven. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
