Subject: The "rock" on which Jesus built church? |
Bible Note: Great question, Hank! (I'm still going through your postings..) I know that every good Catholic out there would probably take issue with us here, but I am also in agreement with JVH and jim.. Ryrie's Study Bible comments, " 'you are Peter'. The name Peter (Gk., Petros) means "rock" or "rock-man". In the next phrase Christ used petra (upon this rock), a feminine form for "rock", not a name. Christ used a play on words. He does not say "upon you, Peter" or "upon your successors," but "upon this rock"- upon this divine revelation and profession of faith in Christ. 'I will build' shows that the formation of the church was still in the future. It began on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2). The word church appears in the Gospels only here and in 18:17. 'gates of Hades' The entrance into Hades, which is physical death; i.e., the physical death of Christ (mentioned immediately in v. 21) will not impede the progress of the church simply because He would be raised from the dead."The Oxford Annotated RSV also adds.. "For the view that all the apostles also form the foundation of the church, see Eph. 2:20, Rev. 21:14. "Church" see Galations 1:13.."Are there any Catholics out there that are members of the Forum? |
