Bible Question: IS PETER THE ROCK UPON WHICH THE CHURCH WAS BUILT? |
Bible Answer: Yes, I believe so. Peter (Greek "Petros", Latin "Petrus") was the word used for "Kepha" (aramaic), and the same Kepha rendered as "Petra" (Greek), "Petram" (Latin). So, originally the aramaic sentece may have been "You are kepha and on this "kepha" I will build my church" English did not develop the etymological derivative from Latin "Petrus" or Greek "Petros" , as opposed to other latin or romance languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, Romanian, etc. (i.e. You are "Pedro" and on this "Piedra" I will build my church (Spanish), "Pierre" - "Pierre" (French), "Pietro" - "Pietra" (Italian), etc. In other words, "Petros" (Greek), "Petrus" (Latin) as a name did not exist, but "Petram" so, the first translators had to coin a word and then they had the masculin form for "Petra" and "Petram" |
