Bible Note: Hi, Sogwop... Although this "Spirit upon" versus "Spirit within" is a common teaching, it doesn't fully square with the language of Scripture. In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit is spoken of as being "within" people in such passages as Genesis 6:3; 41:38; Numbers 27:8; Job 32:8; Ezekiel 3:24; 36:27; 37:14; and Jeremiah 20:9. Also, in the New Testament the Holy Spirit is spoken of as coming "upon" people in Luke 24:29; Acts 1:8; and 1 Peter 4:14. As I said, I know this is a popular teaching nowadays. However, it strikes me as an uncomfortable place to hang one's theological hat when the Scripture doesn't always uphold this dichotomy of "within" and "upon." Furthermore, I do not find this particular pneumatological doctrine articulated in any of the orthodox creeds and confessions. In Him, Doc |
