AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 12:40 for just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. [Jon 1:17] |
Bible Question:
I am concerned about the controversy that the church has brought about concerning the three days and three nights of Jesus being in the tomb. Many churches contend that Jesus was laid into the tomb on Friday evening, (Jewish days, from 6pm to 6pm) hopwever this would not include three nights. I believe in the literal 3 days and nights and contend that it was Thursday evening when Jesus was lain in the tomb. My question is, is ther any type of chart explaining the order in which the three days and three nights are explained. Jesus himself said he would be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. Matt:12:40. Also does John 19:31 give us a extra day before the Sabbath Day to show the necessity of the burial before Friday. |
Bible Answer: Hi Eden’s Fury, When considering the day that Jesus was crucified and laid in the grave, you may want to consider the following: Jesus said that the “three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” would be a SIGN. It is therefore unlikely that He meant anything other than what is plainly stated. • Matthew 12: 38 Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Teacher, we would see a sign from thee.39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given it but the sign of Jonah the prophet: 40 for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. • John 11:9 Jesus answered, " Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. Jesus said he would be raised up on “the third day” and also “after three days.” This would also indicate a literal “three days and three nights.” • Matthew 16: 21 From that time began Jesus to show unto his disciples, that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up. • Matthew 17: 22 And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men; • 23 and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised up. And they were exceeding sorry. • Matthew 20: 19 and shall deliver him unto the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify: and the third day he shall be raised up. • Matthew 27: 63 saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said while he was yet alive, After three days I rise again. • Mark 9: 31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered up into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he shall rise again. • Mark 10: 34 and they shall mock him, and shall spit upon him, and shall scourge him, and shall kill him; and after three days he shall rise again. There were two Sabbaths the week that Jesus was crucified. The day after Passover is a High Sabbath and then there was the weekly Sabbath on Saturday. Note that Jesus body had to be removed from the cross because the next day was a High Sabbath. • Leviticus 23: 5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, is Jehovah's passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto Jehovah: seven days ye shall eat unleavened bread. 7 In the first day ye shall have a holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work. • John 19:31 Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Now note the matter of the women and the spices. They bought the spices after the Sabbath was past, but prepared the spices before the Sabbath. How is this possible, except if they bought the spices after the High Sabbath and prepared them before the weekly Sabbath. This would indicate that Jesus was crucified on Wednesday, Thursday was the High Sabbath, the spices were bought and prepared on Friday, and Saturday was the weekly Sabbath. • Mark 16: 1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, that they might come and anoint him. • Luke 23:56 Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
