NASB | Matthew 10:23 ¶ "But whenever they persecute you in one city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 10:23 ¶ "When they persecute you in one city [because of your faith in Me], flee to the next; for I assure you and most solemnly say to you, you will not finish going through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. |
Bible Question:
Is this apply to the 12 who went out 2-by-2? Are Christians being persecuted today in Israel? If so do they move on like they were told? If this applies today, where in Israel have we not gone? Could this be for the future, too? Why would God want all His people to hear? Steve |
Bible Answer: Dear Steve, Yes, this applies to the disciples who were sent out 'two by two' (Matt 10:1-5). As for what is meant by "you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes"... "The disciples are named in pairs and probably were sent out that way (see Mark 6:7)." Nelson Study Bible "10:16-25 Conflict and persecution are to be expected by these apostolic messengers. Matthew places emphasis on the opposition that the gospel messengers will experience from the Jewish leadership, both civil (in the regional councils) and religious (in their synagogues). The charges against them will give opportunity for testimony before the Roman authorities as well. They are to persevere in their witness for Christ to the end of the present age and the coming of the Son of Man, which will take place before they have completed their witness to the towns of Israel. This emphasis in picturing the role of the new community is unique to Matthew." Cambridge Annotated Study Bible "10:23 Some have incorrectly interpreted this verse to mean that Jesus was convinced that the mission of the Twelve would create a great repentance among Israel. Consequently, the kingdom of God in the form of its final, glorious manifestation would come, bringing the end of this age and ushering in the age to come. This would in fact happen before they had completed their mission. This verse, however, looks beyond the mission of the Twelve to a future mission to the world which will last until the coming in glory of the Son of Man, and will include Israel despite her blindness." Believer's Study Bible Yes, I believe that Christian persecution is taking place in Israel (right along with the Jews) by the Palestinians. Some of the Christians stay for the sake of living in the Holy Land, others for a 'beacon' to Israel despite Israel's blindness! We have not reached all Israel with the Gospel and many, many who are Jewish reject Jesus as their Messiah and they are still, in fact, waiting on their Messiah (Zech. 12:10).. "I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn."
