Bible Question:
The initial answer to this question sounds good, but there are some problems with it: 1. The number of generations that appear between Zerubbabel and Jesus in Matthew is dramatically fewer (1/2) than in Luke. This same ratio is found between David and Shealtiel. This would imply that the generational rate in Mary's bloodline is twice that of Joseph. How do scholars address this difference? 2. What is the importance of Matthew stressing the 14 generations between Abraham-David, David-Babylon, and Babylon to Christ in verse 1:17? 3. Doesn't Luke, by virtue of the fact that he has twice as many generations listed, challenge this fact listed in Matthew? |
Bible Answer: While Luke says there were 56 generations, both skipped generations. Matthew and Luke were each inspired by the Holy Spirit. There are differences in the OT, as well. For some reason Matthew chose 3 * 14 or 42 generations. It could be a play on numbers. One view is that it is 6 (man) * 7 (perfect) is man perfected ... another is 14 is the numeric value of David. |
