Bible Note: One possible explanation to this question is that Mathhew is giving the line of royal descent, while Luke is giving the line of actual descent by blood. Thus Matthew lists each person who ascended the throne even if they were not strictly sons of the previous person mentioned, if the previous one died childless. Thus Joseph's father was Heli, but his right to the throne of Israel came to him because Jacob died childless. He was thus from a Jewish point of view 'the son of Jacob', that is, his heir. |
