AMPLIFIED 2015 | Numbers 4:6 and they shall put on it a covering of porpoise skin (fine leather), and shall spread over that a cloth of pure blue, and shall insert the carrying poles of the ark. |
Bible Question: I am having problems with the way Numbers 4:6 has been translated in the amplified bible. It refers to the veil covering the ark to be covered with porpoise or dolphin skin. The KJV says that it was badger's skin. Using study helps it says badger or goat skin. How did the translators come to decide that it was dolphin? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Calchey, "and they shall lay a covering of porpoise skin on it, and shall spead over it a cloth of pure blue, and shall insert its poles." Numbers 4:6 [NASB] The Hebrew word in question here is 'tachash' (Strongs Reference No. 8476), which means "Probably of foreign derivation; a (clean) animal with fur, probably a species of antelope: - badger." (according to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance) According to the NET Bible (http://www.bible.org/netbible/index.htm).. "[6]tn The exact meaning of the Hebrew word here is difficult to determine. The term 'tahas' has been translated “badger [skins]” by the KJV tradition. The RSV uses “goat” skin; the NEB and NASB have “porpoise” skin, and the NIV has “sea-cow” hide. This is close to “porpoise,” and seems influenced by the Arabic. The evidence is not strong for any of these, and some of the suggestions would be problematic. It is possible the word is simply used for “fine leather,” based on the Egyptian ths. This has been followed by NRSV (“fine leather”) and NLT (“fine goatskin leather”) and the present translation." Perhaps it would do you service to know that there is a great variance of interpretation of what exactly this word actually is referring to. Blessings to you, Makarios |
