Bible Question: I have the same question and thought about the rounding up, but when a census was taken of the first born this number was not rounded and came to 22,273 and the 273 that was over had to be redemeed. If the original number was given then the 273 would have fallen with the 22,300. I am just trying to comprehend this section. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. |
Bible Answer: Hello bravevols, There is an assumption that each Levitical family census was estimated. When you add the estimated numbers, it comes to 22,300. For census purposes, they rounded this number to 22,000 which was satisfactory for the Lord. Evidently, there were actually 22,273, and He wanted this exact amount noted to teach a lesson concerning redemption. Unfortunately, I don't have any information on why it was acceptable to round the census number down to the nearest 1,000. Steve |
