Bible Question:
Looking at the Biblical idea of elders here and tracing it from the OT into the NT. In Numbers 11:16-17 the Lord grants to Moses help in judging the matters of the people. In 1 Timothy 3:1-13 Paul shows the qualifications for elders. What would be the difference if any between how the Lord had elders functioning in the OT and how they should be functioning now according to the NT? blessings abound, bowler |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... Act 20:28-31, 2Ti 2:24-26, 1Th 2:11-12 ... bowler, To understand the role of the elders in the chutch, one needs to understand the Jewish culture in the OT and NT. Acts 20:28-31 shows us they had the discipline and oversight of the church plus rule and guide in a way pleasing to God. They were to nurture and preserve life of those under their charge, by teching them God's way (2Ti 2:24-26, 1Th 2:11-12). Not all churches that are elder ruled. Some are ruled by the congregation, others by the pastor. Each has their view on the role of the elder. Searcher |
