Bible Note: Aixen7z4 Sounds like an interesting book! Let me ask why the connection between tithing and legalism? Tithing existed long before the law as way to show honor and tribute. In fact the word tribute plays right into it, since it’s could mean to pay honor or respect or money (tithe). Tithing is practiced worldwide outside Christianity in many basic cultures as a form of worship, to give tribute and to show honor. Also in Luke 11:42 But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Isn’t Jesus in fact saying, yes you should tithe and likewise give or show justice and love? While this verse’s intent was to bring correction we often overlook Jesus clearly said you ‘ought to have done’ these, these being tithing. Jesus seems to address the subject of tithing as being not open for discussion but as something that is simply done. I also noticed it is often a person that doesn’t care for how the tithe is used that brings forth the question on tithing. That begs the question is the problem tithing or stewardship by charged to oversee the tithe? I tithe and even if you could change my perception of tithing to God I still wouldn’t quit because I know the dividends it has returned to me. EdB |
