AMPLIFIED 2015 | Malachi 2:16 "For I hate divorce," says the LORD, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with wrong and violence," says the LORD of hosts. "Therefore keep watch on your spirit, so that you do not deal treacherously [with your wife]." |
Bible Question (short): ESV translation of Malachi 2:16 |
Question (full): The English Standard Version translates Malachi 2:16 different than the NASB. It reads: "For the man who hates and divorces, says the LORD, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the LORD of hosts. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not be faithless." In emailing Crossway Books, the publisher of the ESV, their response was that their translators and the Malachi specialist were all convinced that it had been mistranslated for a very long time, with that "tradition" appearing to start as far back as Jerome in the Vulgate. I am wondering if any of you who know the Hebrew language might have some thoughts on this matter. |
