Bible Question: I want to understand why in haggai 2:10-19 God asked them to remember and think on very carefully the day that the first stone of the temple was laid. Why is this so important? |
Bible Answer: Hi Nicks, Welcome to the forum and thank you for your question. I think that you will enjoy this forum. I find it of interest that in the verses where we are told to "do consider from this day onward", that onward can be translated "backward" in the Hebrew. See marginal note in the NASB Study Bible. In other words, not only were the Israelites told to think back and look forward but we too on this side of the cross can look backward and consider. Haggai 2:15, "But now, do consider from this day onward [forward, NKJ]: before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the (Lord),..." Haggai 1:2, "Thus says the Lord of hosts, "This people says, [Lit, hosts, saying,] "The time has not come, even the time for the house of the (Lord) to be rebuilt."'" I have considered: I think that the time has come for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt. I think that it is time to lift Him up and give Him the glory for His house is much more than our house. Let us consider and give glory to this "stone". Consider the stone of offense and stumbling for the Jews. Consider the cornerstone, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Haggai 2:5, "'As for the promise which (I) made you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit is abiding in your midst; do not fear!' 6 For thus says the Lord of hosts, 'ONCE MORE IN A LITTLE WHILE, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land. 7 And I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the wealth of all nations; and I/ will fill this house with glory,' says the Lord of hosts." Hebrews 12:25, "See to it that you do not refuse (Him) who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him [Him, NKJ] (the stone?) who warned them on earth, much less shall we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven." Hebrews 12:26, "And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "Yet ONCE MORE I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven." So I see the Scriptures telling all of us to consider what the "stone" has said. Do not refuse Him who is speaking. Use this cornerstone to rebuild the earthly temple into the house of the Lord. May His house be filled with glory. Zechariah 2:5, "'For I, declares the Lord, 'will be a wall of fire around her, and (I) will be the glory in her midst." Behold the Man! From the heart, Ray |
