Bible Answer: Hi, Erwin! Jesus offered many teachings... some related directly to actual events as they occurred in His presence, others, through the use of parables... One in particular is the passage that deals with the two men that went to the Temple: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 18:10-14) God searches not only the projections we portray, but the inner most truth that lies in our hearts! This particular passage (Luke 18:10-14) is a clear example of two different forms of behavior displayed by two believers--yet one man, the seemingly less spiritual person (I render this in terms of the world: the world equates affluence with closeness to God), was justified (believed, accepted, exalted) by God. Two other examples of humility can be found in the passage concerning the widow and her offering (Mark 12:41-43), and in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). Jesus also commanded the disciples to behave as though each were the lesser of the rest (Luke 22:25-26)... our humility is greatest when we continue to place God above everything else and when we love others as ourselves!
