Bible Question: If God already knows beginning to end, how does prayer change his mind? Or does it? What would be the purpose he already knows how it turns out? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Montana_mom! Does God change his mind? Perhaps the following verses can help: Jonah 3:10, 1 Sam. 15:29, Malachi 3:6, and Jeremiah 18:7-10. In the case of Jonah 3:10, I believe that God already knew what He was going to do (in His sovereignty): Jonah 4:11. 1 Sam. 15:29 seems to indicate that God does not change his mind. But this verse was spoken with the context of the kingship of Saul being 'torn away' from him by God and eventually given to David. Malachi 3:6 clearly says that God does not change (compare with Hebrews 13:8). But Jeremiah 18:7-10 is the exception here: Jer 18:7 "At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy it; Jer 18:8 if that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it. Jer 18:9 "Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it; Jer 18:10 if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it. This passage in Jeremiah clearly indicates that there is perhaps room for volition to heed the call of God through repentance (like Nineveh in Jonah), but I believe that God in His sovereignty knows already how everything will turn out. :-) Blessings to you, Makarios |
