NASB | Jonah 1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Jonah 1:3 But Jonah ran away to Tarshish to escape from the presence of the LORD [and his duty as His prophet]. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish [the most remote of the Phoenician trading cities]. So he paid the fare and went down into the ship to go with them to Tarshish away from the presence of the LORD. [Gen 4:16; Job 1:12; 2:7] |
Bible Question: Why do you suppose Jonah chose to go to Tarshish. |
Bible Answer: this is easy because i just read this story this morning. The answer is , because Tarshish is the complete opposite direction. Jonah disliked these people so much until he wanted to get as far from them as he could (like God wouldn't know the exact location of where he was ) Suppose I asked you to eat frog legs and you had to eat them at my house, and you despised frogs. You would not come any where near my house or around it for fear that I might see you or someone that knows me would see you and then I would send for you. Jonah , since back in those days they did not have planes, cabs or trains , took the only transportation out that was going as far as possible away from Ninevah. Maybe he thought God would change his mind and tell him, "Okay Jonah, since your going the opposite direction, you don't have to preach to the people of Ninevah now" That just goes to show you whatever God wants you to do you eventually will do it or death will be your reward. Jonah prayed to God in the belly of the whale and the trip back to Ninevah was a three day trip. However, Jonah made it in one day. Ha Ha , that always tickles me when I hear or read that, because Jonah really wanted to obey God in one of the truest forms. He put some pep in his step, perhaps because Jonah had already lost precious time. Thank God he made up for it, those people in Ninevah really wanted to do what was right. |
