Bible Question: Matthew 5:32 states that "whosoever shall put away his wife, except for fornication, causes her to commit adultery..." The Greek word "pornea" means fornication. Why do some Bibles use "unfaithfulness"? Does pornea or fornication include more or less than the sexual act? I ask because a friend is being divorced from his wife because he has a pornography addiction. She has been told by her pastor that divorce is ok in this situation. I told him that his wife is sinning by seeking a divorce. Who's right? |
Bible Answer: Hi Pornea Strong's 4204 means harlot or prostitute Porneuo Strong's 4203 means sexual immorality According to Jesus the husband has committed adultery Matthew 5:28 “ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” However I agree the Pastor needs to rethink his position. Divorce will solve nothing. If the husband is trying to solve the problem the wife should try to forgive him and together work to restore the marriage. If the husband will seek counseling then that would be the first place to start if he refuses, then perhaps the wife might consider separation, in an effort to awaken him to the seriousness of the situation. In any case divorce should be the very last resort and will bring more hurt than either the husband or wife have already experienced. If there are children involved it becomes even worst. Divorce solves very little and opens whole new issues, most are worst than the those that caused the original divorce. EdB |
