AMPLIFIED 2015 | Leviticus 25:10 'And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom [for the slaves] throughout the land to all its inhabitants. Bible Question: Is it okay for christian men to to earrings? How can we respond to other believers who want to where earrings and represent Christ? |
Bible Answer: There were men and women in the Bible who wore earrings (Exodus 32:2-3; Numbers 31:50; Judges 8:24; Song of Solomon 1:10-11). The Bible nowhere condemns earrings in women or men. The earring took one of its Biblical perspectives from "The Year of Jubilee" out of the old testament. In Lev Chapter 25 it prohibits anyone from selling himself or his land permanently. Verse 10 states "And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family". In this verse (proclaim liberty) is related to (freedom, liberty), it is a expression referring to the release of Hebrew slaves and of property every fifty years. If one was happy with his master or land owner and wished to stay where they were. They got their ear pierced to show that they wasn't enslaved no more. So everyone could see that they choose to stay there of their own free will. So in considering an earring here are some Biblical principles. (1) Why do you want the earring? Are you doing it to glorify God or to draw attention to yourself (2) What impact will the earring have on your life? Will it help you grow spiritually or is your desire to be like everyone else? So, as you can see, an earring is not necessarily a matter of right and wrong. It is more of a matter of what is acceptable, and what is excellent. 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 declares, “Everything is permissible" – but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible" – but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.” |
