Bible Question: Can you explain what Hebrews 8 means regarding the covenant with Moses? Some tell me that even though it speaks of Jesus as the fulfillment of law that this only means as far as forgiveness of sins. They say that everything else in the old testament is still to be followed because God never changed any of his laws and since Jesus said he did not come to do away with the laws? |
Bible Answer: Chapter 8 in Hebrews is a comparison of the old covenant which was a covenant of law between God and Isreal with the new covenant of grace. Jesus states that He is the fulfillment of the law in the sense that God requires a blood sacrifice for sin. To be forgiven for a sin blood must be shed (see Lev 17:10-11). In the old covenant the blood of an animal was shed. With the new covenant the blood of Christ was shed for the sins of all. When Christ stated that He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it He was referring to the blood sacrifice He was to offer in order to fulfill God's rule that blood must be shed for the forgiveness of sins. Christ only canceled out the sacrificing of animals for sins, not the old testament. prayon |
