Bible Question: how do i fast and pray? |
Bible Answer: Hi B. Santiago, On the one hand, there is a simple answer to your question. You stop eating, and start talking to God. But there is more than that. Lev 16:29 "And it shall be a statute to you forever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you. In the Law for the Day of Atonement, the call to fast was written as "afflicting your souls". This day was set apart, dedicated to the recognition of sin, and for dealing with it according to God's way. Sin is a denial of God, in favor of our flesh. Fasting is the denial of our flesh, in favor of God. When we fast, we are demonstrating in our life, in our body, that we do not serve our flesh first, but that we have put God first. We use the time, the resources, the energy we would have spent eating in pray to God. In fasting, we afflict ourself. We deprive ourselves of something the body WANTS. With every hunger pang we remember our focus on God, committing ourselves to Him, at the expense of our flesh. As the body grows weaker, the spirit grows stronger. As we deny earthly sustenance, we receive heavenly sustenance. Pray first, and let the Holy Spirit lead you. Fill those hours or days with pray and Scripture. Be mindful of medical requirements. Talk to your doctor first if appropriate. Give yourself in full obedience to God, and He will guide you to complete all the works He has foreordained that you should complete. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
