Bible Question: In the bible I have read how that women after giving birth went through purification rituals. In Luke it talks about how Mary went through a purification ritual. What is the reason that women today do not do this? |
Bible Answer: Welcome to the forum! The Law prescribed that women were ceremonialy unclean for a period of time after childbirth (or even an abortion, under certain circumstances). This period of time varied depending on whether the child was a male or female. During this time they were separated from the temple and from eating Passover or making offerings. If I remember correctly there were also some additional prohibitions for the wives of priests. I do not know why this was particularly important to the Lord. Perhaps the reasons for it are no more than it *was* the will of the Lord. In any case, in Christ Jesus these prohibitions ceased since, in Him, there is no difference made between the sexes (see Gal 5:28 and Col 3:11). Perhaps others in the forum may be able to suggest the reasons for this particular law. I have some other resources and will continue to look. However, I suspect that anything we uncover may only be speculative. I am sorry that I cannot give you a more satisfying or explicit answer. In Him, Doc |
