AMPLIFIED 2015 | Leviticus 10:6 Then Moses said to Aaron and to his [younger] sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "Do not uncover your heads nor let your hair hang loose nor tear your clothes [as expressions of mourning], so that you will not die [also] and so that He will not express His wrath and anger toward all the congregation. But your relatives, the whole house of Israel, may mourn the burning which the LORD has brought about. |
Bible Question:
in Leviticus 10:6 mosses told Aaron, Eleazar an dIthamar not to uncover their heards or they would die. Why? And in verse 9 the could not drink any alcohol in the tent. Why? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Melissa... Mourning for the dead was expressed at this time by removing one's turban and tearing one's clothing. Moses was warning Eleazar and Ithamar that they should not mourn the death of the sons of Aaron, for their death was a judgment by God. By offering "strange fire" they had dared to approach a holy God on their own terms, rather than on His terms. (That is just as dangerous today, too!) Regarding verse 9: I believe the general consensus is that the sons of Aaron had been drinking when they committed the transgression in verse 1. Regardless, it seems pretty clear that proper priestly service to the Lord could not conceivably be performed in an acceptable manner by men who were inebriated. In Him, Doc |
