AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hosea 5:4 Their [immoral] practices will not permit them To return to their God, For the spirit of prostitution is within them And they do not know the LORD [they do not recognize, appreciate, heed or cherish Him]. |
Bible Question: What is the 'spirit of harlotry'? |
Bible Answer: This "spirit of harlotry (prostitution)" is a Hebrew idiom referring to Israel's idolatry. Hosea makes this clear in the preceding chapter, specifically in Hosea 4:12. The idiom is poignant. Israel violated its covenent with God and sold out to idols in a manner not unlike a prostitute who violates her body by selling sexual favors. In either case God's commandments are broken. --Hank |
