AMPLIFIED 2015 | Daniel 9:24 ¶ "Seventy weeks [of years, or 490 years] have been decreed for your people and for your holy city (Jerusalem), to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make atonement (reconciliation) for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness (right-standing with God), to seal up vision and prophecy and prophet, and to anoint the Most Holy Place. |
Bible Question:
Question: Are the Magi an example of God's interaction with a non-Hebrew people? If you believe the Bible, specifically Romans 1:20, which basically indicates that each individual who ever lived on this earth is accountable before God without any excuse, haven't you ever wondered how other people groups interacted with God? Certainly other people groups must have. And so we look to find examples of such. Is the Magi story an example of such an event when God in his sovereignty must have reached out and enlightened their minds so that they would search out the King of the Jews and worship Him [matthew 2:1-2] apart from the teaching from Old Testament books? If their knowledge was based on Old Testament scripture one would assume that they would have known that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem which they apparently did not. This event begs the question: how long and in what way did the people who the Magi represented know God and if they knew God was it due to teachings that had come from some Hebrew or as a direct consequence of searching for the Creator? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Tlewis! From their exchange with Herod and his people we can understand that they were aware of a King being born to the Jews... Notice, though, how important that is! The people of Israel were under the rule of Rome; Rome had no king but Caesar... these three men were not looking for the king of Rome! Their expression was that they had followed His Star... this suggests Divine inspiration and guidance: using a science which they were familiar with, God was able to convey the news and guide them to the general geographical location... but this was not mere coincidence... Herod, whose people were also aware of the Jewish Scrolls (remember that way back when people in power were more or less schizos seeing threats in everything and from everyone...) needed to be informed that the King was in his midst (prophecies: the killing of the children; the dragon wanting to devour the child)... Two other factors: 1. The Jews were dispersed throughout the known world (and perhaps even beyond)... as they formed tight-knit communities, they exposed others to Yahweh and their form of worship (One God); 2. Jesus commanded the disciples to go and make disciples of the whole world--all who are taught by God, through nature or the Israel of the Old Covenant, will know Jesus and will come to Him as He calls them through His disciples! God Bless! Angel |
