Subject: False Prophets in our Midst |
Bible Note: "Both the Old and New Testaments repeatedly warned believers about the danger of false prophets. ...God's Word warns people to avoid anyone who claims to speak for God but in reality does not. So when a person claims to have received new revelation from God then, we might ask, 'What criteria can we use to discern whether or not they are really speaking for God?' How can we recognize a false prophet? "The Bible articulates three criteria for identifying a false prophet... "The first would be the test of doctrinal orthodoxy. God's true prophets proclaim doctrines that are right and true. New Revelation is always consistent with previous revealed truth. [Deuteronomy 13:1] "Second, moral integrity. God's true prophets are characterized by personal holiness. Those who claim to speak for God must also live out that truth in their lives. [Jeremiah 23:10-11] "And then thirdly, predictive accuracy. God's true prophets foretell future events or reveal hidden things with 100 percent accuracy. [Jeremiah 28:9] Here's what Ezekiel says, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Woe to the foolish prophets who are following their own spirit and have seen nothing."' [Ezekiel 13:3]" --Nathan Busenitz (2013) http://www.gty.org/resources/sermons/TM13-8/a-word-from-the-lord-evaluating-the-modern-gift-of-prophecy-nathan-busenitz |
