Bible Question:
Hello all, I have recently been born again, and came across a troubling post today... This one guy posted 40 or so broken promises made by God in the bible. Here is just one of them? can anyone explain this? I didnt belive it at first, but I looked it up myself, any solutions to this? I'm concerened , heres on example. 35. In Jeremiah (34:4) God tells Zedekiah that he will die in peace and be buried with his fathers. But this verse and Jer.52:10-11 say that he died a violent death in a foreign land. 25:7 Jeremiha 34 (4-5) 4 Yet hear the word of the LORD, O Zedekiah king of Judah! Thus says the LORD concerning you: ‘You shall not die by the sword. 5 You shall die in peace; as in the ceremonies of your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so they shall burn incense for you and lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!” For I have pronounced the word, says the LORD.’” Jeremiha 52:10-11 10 Then the king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes. And he killed all the princes of Judah in Riblah. 11 He also put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him in bronze fetters, took him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Living4God! Welcome to the family of God! :-) You will quickly discover in your Christian walk that most sites that claim errors or broken promises in Scripture subtly twist their quotations. This is the case in this particular example. Let us look at what was promised to Zedekiah. 1) He would not die by the sword (Jer. 34:4). 2) You will die peacefully (Jer. 34:5). 3) Their will be a fire of lament made in your honor (Jer. 34:5). There also some promises made in the previous verses as well. 4) You will not escape from the king of Babylon (Jer. 34:3). 5) You will be captured (Jer. 34:3). 6) You will see the king with your own eyes (Jer. 34:3). 7) You will go to Babylon (Jer. 34:3). Now, lets look at the historical account of Jeremiah 52 and see if any of these promises were broken. He did not die by the sword. He was captured. He did go to Babylon. He lived in prison. He died (but not by the sword). It is clear that the promises of God were kept. But, notice in the site's question that they slip in the word 'violent' in reference to Zedekiah's death. Where in Jer. 52 does it say that he died a violent death? It doesn't. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
