NASB | Jeremiah 32:35 "They built the high places of Baal that are in the valley of Ben-hinnom to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I had not commanded them nor had it entered My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Jeremiah 32:35 "They built the high places [for worship] of Baal in the Valley of Ben-hinnom (son of Hinnom) to make their sons and their daughters pass through the fire to [worship and honor] Molech--which I had not commanded them nor had it entered My mind that they should do this repulsive thing, to cause Judah to sin. Bible Question:
Thank you for your response. If what happened in Jer 32:35 never came into God’s mind, why would it come into his mind to burn us for eternity? And God says he saw this practice as a sin, God can’t sin, so he wouldn’t burn us for eternity..? Also the Sodom and Gomorrah verse (Jude 1:7), “undergoing the punishment of eternal fire,” if it is not burning today, then this verse is symbolic, therefore, all other versus referring to people “undergoing the punishment of eternal fire” is symbolic as well. Again, these questions are from my husband, and we are discussing the hell doctrine and this is what he’s told me to disprove hell. I have always believed that there is a hell, from what the Bible teaches me. Also what does it mean when a verse is symbolic, or literal? Thanks to all Julia |
Bible Answer: Julia, The point in Jerimiah 32:35 is that child sacrifice never entered his mind. The means, passing through fire, is completely secondary to the point. The point was the child sacrifice. Nor can you take something like this in such a blanket sense. He means that He never wanted the Israelites to sacrifice their children, we don't stretch that to exclude something like God sending His son to die on the cross. Even if the point was a burning in fire, God would not then be saying that somebody burning in fire never entered His mind, but rather that THEM burning THEIR children never entered his mind to command them to do it. Your husband is simply applying this scripture in a way it is not intended. I hope this helps. In Christ, Beja |
