Bible Question: What does Jeremiah 31:31-34 refer to? As a Christian, I was always taught this was the new convenant we live under (Grace) because Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice and mediator of this covenant. (Hebrews 9:15) I've been discussing faith with a friend who converted to Messianic Judiasm. There are those who put a totally different spin on this, say the "new" covenant was only for Israel and Judah (vs. 31) I don't see it that way. I see that Jesus went to the Jews first, but then open the way for the gentiles through Paul. How do I prove it? Or can I? |
Bible Answer: shpagach Read Jeremiah 31:31-34 again they are right God does say He will make a new covenant with Israel and Judah. But He never made said it would be exclusive, being only with Israel and Judah. In fact verse 34 clearly states the covenant would be with all nations. Here is list of old testament verses the foretell of God’s call to the gentile nations. Genesis 18:18 Genesis 22:18 Genesis 26:4 Genesis 28:14 Psalm 2:8 Psalm 22:27 Psalm 68:31Psalm 86:9 Psalm 98:3 Psalm 102:15 Isaiah 2:2 Isaiah 9:2 Isaiah 11:10 Isaiah 18:7 Isaiah 19:18 Isaiah 19:21 Isaiah 19:24 Isaiah 27:6 Isaiah 42:1 Isaiah 44:5 Isaiah 45:14 Isaiah 49:6 Isaiah 49:22 Isaiah 53:10 Isaiah 54:1 Isaiah 55:5 Isaiah 56:7 Isaiah 57:19 Isaiah 59:19 Isaiah 60:3 Isaiah 61:11 Isaiah 62:2 Jeremiah 3:17 Jeremiah 12:16 Jeremiah 31:8 Jeremiah 31:34 Jeremiah 49:39 Ezekiel 47:22 Daniel 7:14 Hosea 2:23 Micah 4:2 Zephaniah 2:11 Zephaniah 3:10 Zechariah 8:20 Zechariah 9:7 Zechariah 14:16 Malachi 1:11 The argument your having is the same argument we see in Acts 11 and discussed again in Acts 15. Through the Holy Spirit the apostles settled this question with their statement in Acts 11:18. Read Acts 10 and 11 for a complete understanding. EdB |
