AMPLIFIED 2015 | Jeremiah 24:1 After Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken Jeconiah [who was also called Coniah and Jehoiachin] the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and the princes of Judah [along] with the craftsmen and smiths into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, the LORD showed me [in a vision] two baskets of figs set before the temple of the LORD. |
Bible Question:
Who was left behind? Why? What did they do? |
Bible Answer: Greetings again Steve, A remnant of Jews remained in Judah during the first deportation to Babylon in 597 B.C. However, a second deportation of Judeans occurred in 538 B.C. "24:1-10 This vision occurred after Jeconiah and others were taken to Babylon in 597 B.C. The good figs represented those who had been deported and promised their return to Palestine. The bad figs depicted those who remained in the land of Palestine or who went to Egypt and were not promised restoration. Excavations show the remarkable architectural accomplishments of Nebuchadnezzar, who used the skilled artisans referred to in verse 1. 24:4-7 Though a remnant did return from Babylon, the blessings promised here await the return of Christ. 24:8-10 Those who remained in the land or who went to Egypt (43:4-7) were actually worse off than those who were taken to Babylon. (...) 25:2-7 For 23 years Jeremiah had urged the people to turn from their evil ways." [Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible, pgs. 1194,1195, copyright 1995, The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago] The bad figs are those who remained at Jerusalem during the 11 years (597-586 B.C.) of Zedekiah's reign. They would be scattered to other countries and face violent death, famine and disease. - Nolan |
