Bible Note: Hi, Brother Hank... As I read Brother Kalos post and your followup, I was thinking: this heresy is a very old one. It might be said to have its roots in Genesis 3. But certainly it is what prompted the early church to establish the canon of Scripture. Not only were there people who wanted to put words into God's mouth, there were those that wanted other words removed. Of course, no matter how often the church deals with heresy, it always rears its ugly head in the next generation or two. There's nothing new under the sun. Charles Spurgeon wrote, "A sacred regard to the authority of God [the Scriptures] ought to lead us to reject an error, however old, sanctioned by whatever authority, or however generally practiced." A common malady of our day, though, is an abysmal lack of knowledge regarding history. Consequently, each generation regards the errors of the past as something new and novel.
