Bible Question:
Isaiah 8:12 "Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy [f] ; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. (the NIV footnote-) f.Isaiah 8:12 Or Do not call for a treaty / every time these people call for a treaty The words 'conspiracy/treaty' are hard to reconcile as equal. A conspiracy is a plan for/with evil intent. While the usual intent of a treaty is to have concord with another party. I can see being fearful of a conspiracy; but a 'treaty'? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Losafollower, Isaiah 8:12 is difficult to understand without the surrounding context. The people of Judah were in constant fear of an invasion from both Assyria and Israel, since both Assyria and Israel conspired together (Isaiah 7:1-2) to terrify Judah. But Isaiah told the people of Judah to trust in God alone (8:13), and not to rely on any foreign power to ally with them, since God alone would deliver them (Isaiah 37:36). "Form a plan, and it shall be thwarted; make a resolve, and it shall not be carried out, for "With us is God!" (Isaiah 8:10) NAB God would eventually would thwart the conspiracy between Israel and Assyria (Isaiah 37:36; for the conspiracy, see: 7:1-2), but He first sent Isaiah to tell Ahaz, King in Jerusalem (Judah), not to ally with Assyria (2 Kings 16:5-18; 2 Chronicles 28:16-21). Isaiah's warning against allying with Assyria was considered as treason because Isaiah did not support Judah's national policies (King Ahaz). He called the people to commit themselves first to God and then to the king. God alone is our shelter and hiding place (Isaiah 4). So, "Do not call for a treaty every time these people call for a treaty".. Do not put your trust in a foreign power who may be allied with your enemy, betray you, and hand you to your enemy: put your trust in God alone, and He will deliver you. Blessings to you, Makarios |
