NASB | Isaiah 53:2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 53:2 For He [the Servant of God] grew up before Him like a tender shoot (plant), And like a root out of dry ground; He has no stately form or majestic splendor That we would look at Him, Nor [handsome] appearance that we would be attracted to Him. |
Bible Question: Since Isaiah 53:2 is referring to Jesus, does this verse describe His physical appearance? If so, does this verse contradict our views that the Christ was a handsome and impressive man who is so carefully portrayed as such in Renaissance paintings? |
Bible Answer: Since I was very young I was taught that according to the history of the area and the physical nature of Jesus' genealogy, that he was of a fairly dark complexion but very average looking in appearance. Nothing outstanding or handsome to speak of. Thank you for the response, I suppose throughout history artists have depicted Jesus as looking more like the people of their own culture. And why not, if they believe Jesus to be like themselves. It seems natural. Just some thoughts, but I think it would be an interesting historical study regarding Jesus' lineage and the physical appearance of Mary's family, etc. Take care, V |
