NASB | Isaiah 53:2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Isaiah 53:2 For He [the Servant of God] grew up before Him like a tender shoot (plant), And like a root out of dry ground; He has no stately form or majestic splendor That we would look at Him, Nor [handsome] appearance that we would be attracted to Him. |
Bible Question: Since Isaiah 53:2 is referring to Jesus, does this verse describe His physical appearance? If so, does this verse contradict our views that the Christ was a handsome and impressive man who is so carefully portrayed as such in Renaissance paintings? |
Bible Answer: Yes it does describe His physical appearance. Christ is portrayed as a handsome man in all paintings but in reality there was nothing that attractive in His physical appearance that would draw us to Him. If He had been a handsome man people could and would of miscalculated His importance. He attracted large crowds not on His appearance but on His salvation and healings. prayon |
