Bible Question: Does this furnace of affliction stated here in light of 1 Peter 1:7 imply that our faith must be tested and tried before it is acceptable to the Lord? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Gbennett76, No, neither Isaiah 48:10 nor 1 Peter 1:7 implies that our faith must be tested and tried before it is acceptable to the Lord. "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;" (Ephesians 2:8). In no way do we "earn" salvation by any work or endurance of faith. Here is a bit of commentary on each verse.. [Isaiah] "48:10,11 refined...tested. Since Isaiah's time, Israel's testings have included the Babylonian captivity and present worldwide dispersion from her Land; unlike silver purged in the furnace, the purging of Israel is not complete, and they are not refined. But God keeps up the afflictions until they are, so His name is not defamed through the destruction of Israel. The nation will be purged (cf. Zech. 13:1). God's plan is such that He alone, not man or man-made idols, will receive credit for Israel's salvation (42:8; cf. Rom. 11:25-27, 33-36). The adversaries of God are never to be given legitimate reasons for scoffing at God and His work." (1) [1 Peter] "1:7 genuineness of your faith. God's purpose in allowing trouble is to test the reality of one's faith. But the benefit of such a testing, or "fire," is immediately for the Christian, not God. When a believer comes through a trial still trusting the Lord, he is assured that his faith is genuine (cf. Gen. 22:1-12; Job 1:20-22). .."
