Bible Question: For the passage Isaiah 44:9-20 what would be a contemporary appliance for us in todays life? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Ashlyn, Isaiah 44:9-20 is a great passage of Scripture to examine in regards to idols. Isaiah 44:8 says, "Is there a God besides me? I know not any." And those "who fashion idols are nothing", and they are "put to shame." Perhaps this would suggest that an idol be defined as an object of wood, stone, or metal that is worshiped.. Even though that perception may be correct in the verses examined above, the Bible's point of view actually defines an idol as being something (anything) that involves allowing anything or anyone to stand in the place of God. For example, modern society has come to rely so heavily on technology and government to solve its problems that many people no longer feel a need for God. They seem to place as much faith in human ingenuity as the ancients placed in their carved images. Some people put themselves in the place of God, putting their "faith" in such things as horoscopes and tarot cards.. They have been made to stand in the place of God. But the Lord will not allow those who practice idolatry to go unpunished (Isaiah 47:10-15), and He still hates idolatry (Deut. 7:25-26). The 1st and 2nd of the Ten Commandments still stand. "Remember this and stand firm, recall it to mind, you transgressors, remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me," Isaiah 46:8-9. Perhaps the best way that we can guard against idolatry is to be sure that God has His place in our lives, so much so that we are putting our trust in Him on a daily basis through daily communion and prayer.
