Bible Question:
Doc, What is your understanding of "whom God choose before the foundations of the world?" If God "knew us and choose us," then would this not predispose that God set certain "souls" apart? And if He did so would it not answer a lot of questions about who and why? |
Bible Answer: Dear P25, I should have also added that nothing "predisposes" God in His choosing. Such a thing would imply merit. If merit were involved, there would be no such thing as grace. In historic Baptist teaching, the old divines put it this way: "Those of mankind that are predestinated to life, God, before the foundation of the world was laid, according to His eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of His will, hath chosen in Christ unto everlasting glory, out of His mere free grace and love, without any other thing in the creature as a condition or cause moving Him thereunto. (Ephesians 1:4, 9, 11; Romans 8:30; 2 Timothy 1:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:9; Romans 9:13, 16; Ephesians 2:5, 12)" --1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, chapter 3, paragraph 5 In Him, Doc |
