Bible Note: Greetings MsSassiOne! I agree, the NASB doesn't include that 'three dimensional' quality in Isaiah 40:22, even though we know what Isaiah was trying to tell us. In contrast, the Douay-Rheims Bible DOES give us that "three dimensional" quality of this prophetic passage! It states, "It is he that sitteth upon the globe of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as locusts: he that stretcheth out the heavens as nothing, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in." The Douay-Rheims translation of Isaiah 40:22 uses the word "globe" to describe the earth, which provides more than ample evidence that the Bible says that the earth is round! The Douay-Rheims Bible was first published in 1609-10 in Douay, which was one year before the publication of the Authorized Version, or first edition of the King James Bible (1611). And this "wording" from the Douay-Rheims is especially fascinating since the concept of the earth being round (instead of flat) was still "fresh" in the hearts and minds of men back in 1609. The year 1609 was less than 120 years after Columbus made his most famous voyage (1492), based on his logic that he could reach the West Indies much more quickly if the earth were as a 'sphere' or 'globe', and he wound up discovering America instead! But this prolific time of trade and commerce prompted one aspiring cartographer named Amerigo Vespucci to write a map of this 'New World', and it could be stated that this land of America was ultimately named after a map-maker! :-) But the REAL mind-boggling aspect of all of this is that Isaiah knew that the earth was round, not flat, as Columbus learned approximately 2,200 years after Isaiah penned his inspired prophecy! If people would have just looked in their Bible and trusted it as being the authentic and inspired Word that it is, then they would have saved themselves so much time and trouble by trying to sail around Africa just to get to the West Indies! :-) Now back to the person who lied to your daughter: I agree, this is just another instance where a person makes false statements to debase the authenticity of the Bible and to put doubt in people's minds.. (2 Peter 2:1) Praise the Lord for your strong faith and the faith of your daughter! Blessings to you, Makarios |
